Well on this little island you can have a very jolly time. Cake, ceilidhs and beer.
There's a lady called Sarah who bakes the best cakes ever. She's quite a monopoly on Colonsay - she cooks for the tearooms at the beautiful Colonsay House gardens, provides the hotel with pudding and has a sweet little cake stall that operates on an honesty box system in her bothy porch.
There's a ceilidh every Saturday, and sometimes one in-between, a superb little art gallery and a brewery. www.colonsaybrewery.co.uk
The fine weather’s broken but that’s ok. Stormy weather somehow suits Scotland better. Like a holey homely tweed jacket suits a rugged ghille better than a shiny new Barbour. I’m snuggled at the lovely Colonsay Hotel with tea and one of Sarah’s cakes – a lemon drizzle this time, to go with the weather. It’s a brilliant excuse not to be on a beach and a chance to look up all the wildflowers I’ve spotted but don’t know and, of course, to plug-in to a bit of new age Wifi and write all this lot down.
